In a recent interview, Xinhua News Agency highlighted the release of a new publication titled “Selected Excerpts of Xi Jinping’s Discourses on Water Governance.” This book, published by the Central Literature Publishing House, is now accessible across the country.

Water is often referred to as the essence of life, the bedrock of existence, and the cradle of civilization. For the Chinese nation, effective water management is vital for survival, development, unity, and prosperity. Since the 18th National Congress, Xi Jinping and the central leadership have approached water governance with a commitment to sustainable development and long-term stability. They have adopted a holistic viewpoint, exploring innovative governance pathways that prioritize the needs of the people and underscore the significance of water management. Their strategy encompasses key principles such as “water conservation first, spatial balance, systematic governance, and dual efforts.”

Additionally, the approach includes measures to prevent water-related disasters, conserve water resources, protect and restore aquatic ecosystems, and manage water environments effectively. These initiatives aim to significantly enhance the country’s water security capabilities while paving the way for new advancements in water management, ultimately benefiting national prosperity and well-being.

The “Selected Excerpts” spans six themes and consists of 297 sections extracted from over 130 significant documents authored by Xi Jinping between December 2012 and August 2024. These materials include reports, speeches, addresses, letters, instructions, and directives—some of which are being published for the first time.
