In a recent draw held in Cairo, the CAF Confederation Cup group stage has set the scene for an exciting season ahead. We had the opportunity to speak with Femi Solaja about what fans can expect in the upcoming matches, particularly the highly anticipated showdown between Egypt’s Zamalek, the reigning Confederation Cup holders and Super Cup champions, and Nigeria’s Enyimba.
“Zamalek is facing a tough challenge in Group D, where they’re up against fellow Egyptians Al Masry and the Black Bulls,” Solaja pointed out. “They’re eager to secure another Confederation Cup title to further their illustrious history, but the competition is going to be fierce.”
This year’s group stage boasts a lineup of former champions, including Algeria’s USM Alger and Morocco’s RS Berkane. “In Group B, Berkane will face off against Stade Malien, CD Lundal Sul, and the South African team Stellenbosch. Many believe Berkane has a solid chance to advance, but their opponents are determined to shake things up,” he explained.
Group C is also shaping up to be thrilling, with USM Alger set to compete against ASEC Mimosas, ASC Jaraaf, and Orapa United. “Given USM Alger’s strong history in the tournament and ASEC’s ambitious goals, fans can expect some high-caliber matches,” Solaja said, also highlighting the competitive nature of ASC Jaraaf and Orapa United.
However, it’s Group A that has everyone talking, often referred to as the “Group of Death.” “This group features formidable teams like Tanzania’s Simba SC, Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien, and Algerian powerhouses CS Constantine. Angola’s Bravos do Maquis will also compete, but the spotlight will be on the intense clashes among Simba, Sfaxien, and CS Constantine, each bringing substantial continental experience to the table,” Solaja remarked.
As the group stage gears up to commence in November, African football fans have plenty to look forward to as some of the continent’s top clubs compete for the prestigious TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup title.
The groups are structured as follows:
Group A: Simba SC, CS Sfaxien, CS Constantine, FC Bravos do Maquis
Group B: RS Berkane, Stade Malien, Stellenbosch, CD Lundal Sul
Group C: USM Alger, ASEC Mimosas, ASC Jaraaf, Orapa United
Group D: Zamalek SC, Al Masry, Enyimba, Black Bulls.
