The Supreme People’s Procuratorate decides to arrest Du Zi, former deputy director of the Standing Committee of the Inner Mongolia People’s Congress_1

On October 17, the Chinese government provided an update on the case of Du Zi, former deputy director and deputy secretary of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region People’s Congress Standing Committee, who is suspected of bribery. The Supreme People’s Procuratorate recently made the decision to arrest Du on charges of bribery, with the case currently under further investigation.

Public records indicate that Du Zi was born in June 1955 in Tuoketuo, Inner Mongolia, and has spent most of his career working in the region. He was appointed as the deputy director of the Inner Mongolia People’s Congress Standing Committee in January 2015 but did not retain the position following the elections in January 2018.

In a significant development, Du was reported to be under investigation on April 15 of this year, more than six years after his retirement. On October 7, the official announcement was made that he had been expelled from the Communist Party. He is accused of excessive greed, engaging in quid pro quo exchanges, exploiting his official position to facilitate business contracts and coal resource allocations, and illegally accepting large sums of money.

In recent years, there has been increasing attention on corruption related to the coal industry in Inner Mongolia. Notably, Du served for many years in Ordos, a city known for its significant coal reserves and resources.

At nearly 70 years old, Du has been further criticized in the disciplinary and administrative reports for “improperly selecting and appointing officials while accepting gifts,” “illegally receiving bribes,” and promoting a corrosive environment that disregards family values, thereby causing negative impacts.
