Van Dijk Holds Talks with Liverpool on New Contract

Liverpool’s captain Virgil van Dijk has confirmed that he is in discussions with the club regarding a new contract. The 33-year-old center-back, who joined Anfield in January 2018, has a current deal that expires at the end of the season.

“Discussions are ongoing, and we will see what happens in the future,” Van Dijk remarked when asked about the situation. “My full focus is on Liverpool and on winning the games that lie ahead of me—nothing else.”

When pressed for details about what lies ahead, Van Dijk stated, “I have no idea at the moment. I can only tell you that discussions have started, and we will see.”

In addition to Van Dijk, England international Trent Alexander-Arnold and Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah also have contracts expiring next summer, but there have been no updates regarding their situations.

Liverpool signed Van Dijk from Southampton for £75 million, and he has played a crucial role in helping the team secure titles, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. This season, under new manager Arne Slot, another Dutchman, Van Dijk has played a key part in leading Liverpool to the top of the Premier League standings, boasting seven wins from their first eight games.

“I feel good—physically, mentally, and I’m having fun,” Van Dijk shared after the team’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Sunday. “When it’s time to make a decision, you [the media] will know as well.”

So far this season, Van Dijk has been instrumental in ensuring that Liverpool has conceded just three goals, giving them the best defensive record in the Premier League.
