USC Arcadia Hospital, Hsi Lai Temple, and Buddha’s Light Association 22nd 2024 -Peace and Joy- Free Clinic Press Conference

The International Buddha’s Light Association’s Arcadia chapter, along with the Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple and USC Arcadia Hospital, is set to host the 22nd annual “Harmony and Joy” free health clinic on Sunday, October 20, from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM at USC Arcadia Hospital. Members of the community are encouraged to come and receive health check-ups.

During a press conference, Abbot Yi Xuan from the Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple emphasized that the clinic aims to bring compassion from the Buddhist community to benefit the local population and those in need. President Wu Shuailun of the International Buddha’s Light Association’s Los Angeles chapter noted that with flu season upon us, the clinic will also be offering free flu vaccinations. Huang Yuqi, the president of the Arcadia chapter, mentioned that this year marks the 22nd year of collaboration with USC Arcadia Hospital, with attendance growing each year—nearly 400 people participated last year. This year, 80 doctors and 120 volunteers will be involved.

Dr. Ikenna Mmeje, the director of USC Arcadia Hospital, expressed that Cliff Daniels, the hospital’s strategist, has participated for 12 years, saying, “It’s exciting to serve our community through these clinics.” Chen Yiting, the president of the hospital foundation, shared her personal connection, having grown up in the San Gabriel Valley and witnessing her grandparents struggle to access medical care due to language barriers. She emphasized the meaningful impact of the clinic, which has served over 10,000 individuals.

Dr. Huang Hsin-yi, a cardiologist at USC Arcadia Hospital, highlighted the importance of CPR training, noting the low rates of CPR and rescue breathing among the Chinese community. Dr. Lin Yuankai added that individuals with diabetes can drink water before arriving for their blood tests but should wait to take their medication until after the blood draw.

Huang Fei, manager of the hospital’s community services department, noted that popular tests over the years have included liver and kidney function tests, thyroid function tests, cholesterol screenings, and diabetes tests, covering a total of 24 biochemical tests. In light of increased screen time from electronic devices harming eye health, the clinic will also provide eye examinations. Patients undergoing carotid artery stroke screenings will concurrently receive thyroid function tests. Through collaboration with USC, cancer consultation services will also be available.

This year, the clinic has also invited representatives from the Los Angeles County Department of Social Services and the Mental Health Department to provide information on health insurance, social welfare, and mental health resources. Additional services will include flu vaccinations, blood pressure monitoring, dementia screenings, body fat assessments, osteoporosis screenings, breast cancer screenings, CPR education, cardiology consultations, nutrition advice, and consultations on liver diseases, totaling 16 different services.

USC Arcadia Hospital will supply medical personnel, testing materials, and the venue for the clinic. The Buddha’s Light Association will handle all non-medical aspects such as volunteer coordination, venue setup, and logistical planning, as well as covering the costs of blood tests and equipment rentals.

Zhang Guoxing, president of Huaxing Insurance, is also actively supporting the “Harmony and Joy” clinic, urging the community to focus on health while continuing to contribute to society’s well-being through initiatives of kindness.

The clinic does not require proof of income or identification and is open to individuals 18 years and older, with all services offered free of charge. Any changes to the testing services on the day will not be announced in advance. Those requiring blood tests must fast after midnight on October 19. Services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, with no appointments accepted. The USC Arcadia Hospital is located at 300 W. Huntington Dr., Arcadia.
