On the afternoon of October 25th, a seminar titled “Understanding Senior Rights” was held at the Confucius Plaza community room in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Jointly organized by the East Asian American Community Association (EAA), the University Neighborhood Housing Program, and Fu Kang Medical, the event aimed to help senior residents of the community better understand their rights and learn how to identify and prevent common scams. The turnout was impressive, with over 60 seniors in attendance, filling the venue to capacity. Water Lilies Food generously sponsored the event.

Sisi Yam, a board member of the East Asian American Community Association, emphasized the growing importance of safeguarding seniors’ rights in today’s society. “The purpose of this seminar is to enhance seniors’ understanding of their rights and assist them in navigating various social welfare resources, as well as boost their scam prevention capabilities,” she stated. “I encourage seniors to participate in similar events to gain valuable information, strengthen their self-protection awareness, and ensure a more secure quality of life in their golden years.”

The seminar featured guest speaker Yanling Chen, an Equality Officer from the nonprofit organization Raising Health. She introduced the range of services provided by Raising Health to seniors and their families, helping them better understand community resources and social welfare, thereby improving their quality of life and security.

Chen also provided detailed explanations on how to recognize and avoid common scams, particularly phishing schemes that often target seniors, raising their awareness of potential threats. According to the FBI’s 2023 Internet Crime Report, seniors aged 60 and above lose at least $3.4 billion annually to scams, making them one of the most affected age groups. In 2023 alone, losses from various scams exceeded $1 billion for the elderly.
