See, Hear, Touch The First Lady’s upgraded White House tour_1

On October 21, First Lady Jill Biden personally led an upgraded tour of the White House for students, allowing guests to witness, hear, and touch a wealth of history and cultural artifacts like never before. This revamped “White House Experience” promises an immersive journey through the nation’s history.

A highlight of this new tour is the previously closed Diplomatic Reception Room, now open to the public. Visitors can stand in the very spot where President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his famous “Fireside Chats,” and listen to recordings of his dialogues with the American people.

The first floor has expanded to include the library, a ceramics room displaying presidential china, and the Silver Room, showcasing gilded silverware.

Upstairs, the second floor—often referred to as the “State Floor”—has broadened its tour areas to include the East Room, the State Dining Room, and the Red, Blue, and Green Rooms. Each room features informational stands detailing the furnishings, historical context, and stories tied to those spaces, encouraging visitors to touch, see, and listen to enhance their experience.

For instance, the ceramics room now has an area where guests can closely examine exhibits. In the State Dining Room, beneath the portrait of President Lincoln, replicas of biblical prayers have been added, enabling visitors to read them aloud without the barrier of distance that previously existed.

As an educator who has taught English and writing for four decades, Jill Biden emphasized, “I understand that learning can occur through various methods. Everyone learns through their senses.” She added, “We’ve printed copies that allow people to feel the texture of the Bible’s cover and the shiny surfaces of the Blue Room furniture. Now you can listen to recordings from the room where President Roosevelt made his Fireside Chats, making it feel like you’re right there with him.”

With enhanced visual displays in these newly opened galleries, guests will find new screens featuring information for a richer reading experience.

According to an aide, after personally traversing the tour route, the First Lady decided to increase the number of points of interest and enrich the educational and historical content—an update that the White House hasn’t seen in decades.

Upon entering the East Room, visitors are greeted with a welcome video from Jill Biden and a historical overview presented by President Biden. Future presidential couples are expected to continue this tradition by producing their own videos. Approximately 10,000 visitors tour the White House each week.
