Principals from many countries discuss how digital education empowers lifelong learning

On October 26, the 2024 International Forum on Digital Education and Lifelong Learning convened in Kunming, focusing on the theme of “Empowering Lifelong Learning through Digital Technology.” University presidents, experts, and scholars from countries such as China, Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and the Maldives gathered to discuss ways to advance the digitalization of education.

In recent years, digital technology and artificial intelligence have been reshaping the educational landscape globally with unprecedented force.

Rafael B. Pecson, president of San Sebastian College in the Philippines, shared his insights: “Traditional education is rapidly merging with digital technologies. Digital education promotes educational equality, allowing individuals from various regions, backgrounds, genders, and ages to access resources and learning opportunities on equal footing.”

Luo Guoquan, secretary of the Party Committee at Yunnan Open University in China, emphasized the role of digital education in building a learning society where “everyone can learn, anywhere can learn, and anytime can learn.” He believes it empowers learners to better face future challenges and fosters inclusive social development.

However, several university leaders and scholars highlighted challenges that need to be addressed. Issues such as inadequate infrastructure, varying quality of education, insufficient digital competencies among teachers, and concerns about data security and privacy protection pose significant obstacles to the implementation of digital education for lifelong learning.

CHHUON Chanthan, president of IIC University of Technology in Cambodia, expressed hopes for international collaboration, particularly with countries like China, to enhance investments in infrastructure in remote areas and to foster mutual exchange in improving digital education capabilities.
