No undue influence over Swift escort – Nandy

In a recent interview with Sky News, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy discussed the provision of police escorts for pop superstar Taylor Swift during her summer concerts in London. Nandy made it clear that the decision to provide this escort was not influenced by senior politicians, including Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who were involved in discussions about security measures for the events.

“I firmly reject any notion of wrongdoing or undue influence in this situation,” Nandy stated, emphasizing that the choice to provide a motorbike convoy for Swift was made by senior police officials, despite their initial hesitations. She explained that the involvement of the Home Secretary in security discussions is typical, especially following the cancellation of one of Swift’s performances in Vienna due to a terror threat.

When asked about the protocols for handling high-profile events, Nandy replied, “For major events, whether in London or elsewhere in the UK, the Home Secretary will typically engage in conversations whenever there’s a security risk.”

Nandy also expressed her trust in the police’s decision-making capabilities, highlighting that ultimately, it is their responsibility to establish security measures. “I want to clarify that she doesn’t have the authority, nor would she exercise that authority, to demand any individual receive the highest level of private security. That’s an operational issue for the police, not the government,” she added.

Reports indicate that although the Metropolitan Police’s special escort unit was initially reluctant to provide Swift with the level of protection usually reserved for royals and politicians, the arrangements were ultimately finalized to ensure her safety.
