More than 100 pieces (groups) of works by famous artists from the China Academy of Art show a panoramic view of the theme of the Yangtze River

On October 18th, the “Wind Rises, Sail Hoisted – Yangtze River Theme Art Exhibition,” guided by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Department of Arts and hosted by the China Academy of Art, opened at the China Academy of Art Oil Painting Institute’s online art gallery.

The exhibition features a total of 102 works, including traditional Chinese paintings, calligraphy, seal carving, oil paintings, and sculptures, organized into five sections: “Expressing Emotion,” “Viewing the River,” “Documenting the Present,” “Reflecting on the Past,” and “Traces.” The “Expressing Emotion” section captures the vibrant social life along the banks of the Yangtze in the new era, while “Viewing the River” showcases the breathtaking landscapes of the region. “Documenting the Present” highlights the new appearances of cities along the river, “Reflecting on the Past” narrates the historical changes that have shaped the Yangtze River Basin over a millennium, and “Traces” illustrates the lively scenes captured during the artists’ field studies.

To prepare for this exhibition, the China Academy of Art launched a Yangtze River-themed creative practice initiative in April of this year. This included theme discussions, site visits, artistic explorations, and the organization of a large-scale collective research and painting activity, involving over 130 artists traveling to regions like Chongqing, Hubei, Jiangxi, and Jiangsu.

During the opening ceremony, artists performed “Eight Wildernesses: The Melody of the River,” emphasizing the event’s cultural significance. Zhou Qingfu, the president and deputy secretary of the China Academy of Art, underscored that this exhibition is not just a creative project centered around the “Yangtze” cultural theme but aims to deeply engage with people’s lives and resonate with the essence of Chinese spirit through meaningful cultural and academic exploration.

The exhibition will run until October 28th.
