In a recent conversation, McLaren’s team principal Andrea Stella shed light on the impact of Oscar Piastri’s exhilarating win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and its implications for the team’s future strategy. Piastri’s victory has sparked discussions around team dynamics, particularly in light of his controversial first-lap maneuver at Monza that affected Lando Norris’s championship ambitions.
Stella recognized the challenges of having two incredibly talented drivers like Piastri and Norris but maintained that their strategy is not fixed. “We essentially have two Number 1 drivers, and our primary focus is always on the team’s interests,” he explained. “Our aim is to compete for both the constructors’ and drivers’ championships. While Lando had a more favorable position prior to the race, today’s result highlights that Lando was actually supporting Oscar. You could say fifty percent of Oscar’s win is due to Lando’s contributions during the pit stop.”
Looking forward, Stella emphasized the importance of analyzing each race with both drivers to refine strategies for upcoming events, including the Singapore Grand Prix. “We operate on a set of principles that allow us to evaluate each situation as it unfolds. Having rigid rules can restrict our adaptability,” he noted.
Despite starting from 15th place, Norris managed to close the gap on championship leader Max Verstappen, showcasing remarkable strategy to finish fourth. Currently, Piastri holds fourth in the standings, trailing Norris by 32 points. Stella expressed pride in both drivers’ performances in Baku, particularly commending Piastri’s impressive overtake.
“I was struck by how Oscar executed that overtake; it really highlighted his talent and precision,” Stella shared. “Throughout those 51 laps, I never felt there was a moment where Lando could have done significantly better. Honestly, expecting us to finish fourth seemed somewhat ambitious initially.”
With this victory, McLaren has regained the lead in the constructors’ championship for the first time since 2014, a notable achievement considering they began the 2023 season in last place. “It’s crucial to remember our starting point this season. But rather than getting caught up in the standings, we’re focused on delivering strong performances at each event. Our car may not yet be quick enough to create one-sided races, but that’s the direction we’re headed as we continue to pursue our goals in Formula 1.”
