On October 15th, in the city of Luoding, Guangdong Province, a celebration kicked off for the 2024 Chinese Farmers’ Harvest Festival, marking the beginning of a series of rice culture events. Often referred to as the ” granary of Lingnan,” Luoding is located in the western part of Guangdong and is known for having the province’s largest basin. This area plays a significant role in rice production and is recognized as China’s first standardized production base for green food ingredients, particularly rice.
The rice produced in Luoding is characterized by its long, uniform grains that are pearly white, glistening, and translucent. With a smooth, elastic texture, it offers a fragrant and sweet taste. According to a local saying, “Planting a grain of millet in spring yields countless seeds in autumn,” and to expand the market for Luoding rice, the city has seized this event as an opportunity to boost its market presence. A total of 32 companies signed 16 projects during the event, with a contract value exceeding 408 million yuan, primarily focusing on rice sales.
Luoding is recognized as one of the “Top 100 Agricultural Production Counties (Cities) in China” and also ranks high in agricultural output and brand presence within the Yunnan region. Since hosting its first rice cultural event in 2012, Luoding has held this celebration for the 13th consecutive year, solidifying “Luoding Rice” as a prominent brand. The city has established a notable national demonstration zone for green rice brands and a base for standardized production of green food ingredients.
Currently, the rice-growing area in Luoding is reported to be around 521,700 acres in 2024, with an expected yield of approximately 247,900 tons. In the first three quarters of the year, the agricultural sector reported a value of 8.03 billion yuan, representing a 2% increase year-on-year. In 2023, the total annual output value for special industries, including rice, traditional medicine, cinnamon, and Luoding bamboo, surpassed 5 billion yuan. Over 100 enterprises are involved in rice processing within the city, with six leading agricultural companies located in the Simao Rice Industrial Park, generating an impressive annual processing output of 1.5 billion yuan.
Luoding maintains a consistent rice planting area of around 500,000 acres with a seed variety coverage rate of 98%. It has established two organic food certification brands and 12 green food certification brands, including Well-Cooked Asian Rice. The practice of rice farming in Luoding has a deep historical legacy, with evidence tracing back to the Spring and Autumn Period as well as the Warring States Period.
