From October 17 to 19, 2024, the Latin America and Caribbean Day and the Jiangsu (Xuzhou) Latin America and Caribbean Countries Cooperation and Exchange Conference took place in Xuzhou, China.
We spoke with Xu Wei, Minister-Counselor of the Latin America Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who emphasized the significant role that Latin America and the Caribbean play within the “Global South.” He pointed out that Jiangsu Province holds a strong competitive edge in various sectors, including modern agriculture, industrial park development, cultural creativity, high-quality tourism, next-generation information technology, high-end equipment, and new energy materials. The potential for deepening cooperation with Latin American and Caribbean nations is immense and promising.
Liu Jiandong, Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Foreign Affairs Office, elaborated on the province’s approach to fostering a close-knit Sino-Latin American community. He stated, “Jiangsu embodies the essence of the China-Latin America community of shared destiny through pragmatic and effective friendship with sister cities. Our successful economic and trade collaborations are paving the way for a tighter bond, while our vibrant cultural exchanges promote a rich tapestry of interactions.”
As the upcoming China-Latin America Forum celebrates its tenth anniversary next year, Liu expressed Jiangsu’s eagerness to explore further collaboration with Latin American and Caribbean countries, weaving a stronger bond of friendship and ushering in a new chapter of cooperation.
Song Lewei, the Secretary of the Xuzhou Municipal Committee, highlighted the robust cooperation Xuzhou has with Latin American and Caribbean countries. He noted that Xuzhou ranks high in Jiangsu Province in terms of friendly city relationships, with successful business investments. Particularly noteworthy is the Xugong Brazil Industrial Park, located in the friendly city of Paço do Lumiar in Brazil, which stands as a model for China-Brazil economic and trade collaboration.
Augusto, the Brazilian Consul General in Shanghai, remarked on the flourishing cooperation between China and Brazil, citing the success of the Xugong Brazil Industrial Park as a prime example of the fruitful results of their joint efforts.
The series of activities for Latin America and Caribbean Day is a structured initiative organized by the Jiangsu Provincial Foreign Affairs Office in collaboration with the consulates of Latin American and Caribbean countries in Shanghai. This event combines exchanges among sister cities, economic and trade matchmaking, product exhibitions, and cultural experiences, becoming a crucial platform for deepening practical cooperation between Jiangsu and these nations while serving as an important window for the local population to experience Latin American and Caribbean culture.
