On October 7, Tohoku Electric Power Company announced its intention to restart Unit 2 of the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant, located in Miyagi Prefecture, on October 29.
As reported by the Asahi Shimbun, the company plans to begin power generation from Unit 2 in early November, aiming for a full resumption of commercial operations by December.
The report also noted that Unit 2 of the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant was damaged and subsequently closed following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The 9.1 magnitude quake triggered a tsunami that reached approximately 13 meters in height, inundating parts of the facility and leading to a failure in the cooling pump.
It’s important to mention that the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant utilizes a boiling water reactor, similar to the design found at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. If everything goes according to plan, this will mark the first nuclear facility in the earthquake-affected region to resume operations.
