The suspect, Ruben Ruiz, 53, was apprehended on October 20, just two days after a warrant was issued for his arrest on October 18. Authorities have charged him with 17 counts of second-degree burglary.
According to police, Ruiz is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds. They noted that he does not have a fixed address and is currently experiencing homelessness.
The first of the burglaries occurred on September 14 at around 6:04 PM. Ruiz allegedly broke into a residence near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Saint James Place, where he stole various tools valued at approximately $1,900. He fled the scene on a bicycle, and thankfully, no one was injured during this incident.
The second burglary took place on September 21 around 4:25 AM, when Ruiz reportedly forced entry into a home near Lafayette Avenue and Grand Avenue. He took tools worth about $1,200 before escaping on his bicycle, again with no injuries reported.
The third and fourth burglaries happened on September 28 in the early morning hours. At 12:59 AM, Ruiz was said to have entered a home near the same location of his first burglary, stealing various tools once more. Later that morning, at 5:57 AM, he broke into a residence near Grand Avenue and Clifton Place, taking multiple items of food before fleeing north on his bicycle.
This pattern of thefts highlights ongoing concerns regarding safety and crime in the community, as residents seek to understand the nature of these incidents and the measures being taken to prevent them.
