George Baldock, the former defender for Sheffield United and Greece, has tragically passed away at just 31 years old. Authorities reported that his body was discovered in his swimming pool at his home in Glyfada, southern Athens, on Wednesday. The cause of death is still unknown. Despite police efforts to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, he could not be revived, and medical emergency units later confirmed his death, as noted by an official who spoke with Reuters.
This summer, Baldock had joined Panathinaikos after spending seven years at Bramall Lane, making his debut in August. He recently played in a 0-0 draw against Olympiakos in the Greek Super League, but was not included in the Nations League squad for the upcoming match against England.
In a heartfelt statement, the Greece national team expressed their sorrow: “With profound sadness, the national team and the Greek Football Federation bid farewell to George Baldock. There are no words to describe the pain caused by the unexpected loss of one of our own. Our deepest condolences go to his family during this incredibly difficult time.”
Sheffield United also honored Baldock, describing him as “extremely popular” among supporters and staff. Their statement conveyed shock and sadness over his passing and extended their heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
Former Sheffield United teammate Harry Maguire paid tribute on Instagram with a simple “RIP” alongside a heartbreak emoji. Dean Henderson remembered him with the message, “RIP Blades legend,” on social media.
The Football Association expressed their grief, stating: “We are devastated to learn of George Baldock’s passing. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and teammates.”
Baldock began his career at MK Dons, where he made over 100 appearances before several loan spells, including two at Oxford. Northampton Town, where he had a loan stint in 2011, expressed sadness over his untimely death, despite him only making five appearances for the club.
After signing with Sheffield United in 2017, Baldock was a key player in the team’s promotion to the Premier League just two years later. Although the team faced relegation in 2021, he played an instrumental role in securing automatic promotion back to the top flight and gained international recognition in 2022.
With Greek heritage, Baldock was encouraged by former Greece head coach Gus Poyet to represent the national team, earning 12 caps, the last of which was earlier this year. After making 219 appearances for the Blades, he transitioned to Panathinaikos.
Notably, Baldock also shared the pitch with his older brother, Sam Baldock, during their time at MK Dons. Sam is now an academy coach at Brighton, and the club has offered support to him and the Baldock family during this heartbreaking time.
MK Dons, where Baldock started his career, expressed their devastation, stating, “Everyone affiliated with MK Dons shares great love for George and the Baldock family. Our sincerest condolences are with you during these awful times. You will always be one of our own, George.”
Baldock’s brother, James, serving as the club doctor at Oxford United, also issued a statement expressing sadness and extending condolences to the Baldock family in this painful time.
