China Red Cross Foundation- More than 50,000 grassroots medical workers have participated in the -Red Tongtong- online course

On October 17, I spoke with representatives from the Chinese Red Cross Foundation about their ongoing “Hong Tong Tong” project, which has made significant strides in enhancing the capabilities of grassroots healthcare workers. As of now, the “Hong Tong Tong” platform offers nearly 200 online courses across various professional fields, with over 50,000 frontline medical professionals participating and accumulating more than 20,000 hours of online learning.

This initiative, launched in 2021, focuses on remote training for grassroots healthcare workers in social work and risk prevention. It leverages wireless networking and digital technology to deliver courses through the “Hong Tong Tong” app and WeChat mini-programs. Experts in social work are involved in developing and designing relevant content aimed at improving the skills of these healthcare workers, thereby strengthening public health defenses.

Since June of this year, the project has undergone a technical upgrade of the “Hong Tong Tong” platform and has been continuously donating pre-installed tablets to grassroots medical institutions in areas such as Guizhou and Heilongjiang. This effort provides essential digital tools for healthcare workers, empowering them to engage in continuous learning.

During a donation event on October 15, Beixiaochao, chairman of the Chinese Red Cross Foundation, emphasized the critical role grassroots healthcare workers play as the guardians of community health and their importance in promoting rural revitalization. He noted that the “Hong Tong Tong” project offers crucial training in social work skills, enhancing healthcare workers’ understanding of patients and fostering trust in doctor-patient relationships, which ultimately improves patient satisfaction and treatment outcomes.

Beixiaochao also highlighted the convenience of the short video learning format offered by the “Hong Tong Tong” platform, which allows healthcare workers to learn in a more fragmented manner—an innovative practice made possible by mobile communication technology.

At the donation event, Xia Quan, Global Vice President of Qualcomm, remarked, “We will continue to leverage our technological advantages in collaboration with our partners to empower social development through innovation.”

The event featured a special training session by Dr. Zhang Xiaojun, a deputy researcher at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, who conducted a workshop for 55 grassroots healthcare workers focused on key measures to enhance health service capabilities. Additionally, the project team provided hands-on training for using the “Hong Tong Tong” platform, enabling healthcare workers to quickly familiarize themselves with its features.
