On October 18, the China Consumer Association (CCA) released its 2024 analysis report on consumer complaints during the National Day holiday, revealing that most feedback from holiday travelers focused on issues related to safety management, pricing and charges, and accommodation bookings.
One of the major concerns highlighted in the report is the confusion surrounding accommodation reservations. Many consumers expressed frustration over the lack of clarity in booking and cancellation procedures, with some finding hidden fees that added to their stress.
In terms of safety management, the report noted significant issues related to overcrowding at popular tourist spots. For example, the Xiangshan Scenic Area in Shanxi province gained notoriety after the video game “Black Myth: Wukong” brought increased traffic to the area. However, the small size and inadequate infrastructure of the site led visitors to voice their dissatisfaction. Moreover, safety risks have escalated in some remote tourist areas, as evidenced by a viral video of a TikTok influencer exploring Ailao Mountain. The scenic area issued warnings, advising against ventures into unfamiliar territories.
Regarding pricing and charges, visitors raised concerns about additional fees for attractions and overpriced services from vendors. For instance, the Zhangjiajie scenic area has been criticized for splitting into nearly 20 separate attractions, each with individual entry fees, sparking controversy. Additionally, at the Lushan Scenic Area in Jiangxi Province, a dispute arose over a 5 RMB charge for hot water for instant noodles brought by visitors, capturing the attention of many online.
The report also pointed out the complications surrounding accommodation bookings, where hotels and platforms are often accused of sudden price hikes and difficulty in cancellations and refunds. Current cancellation policies are varied and complex, including options like “paid cancellations,” “time-limited cancellations,” and “non-cancellable.” Some consumers reported being charged over 1,000 RMB for cancellation because they overlooked the terms during booking. In another case, a traveler faced a sixfold price increase after their pre-booked hotel was canceled. Many consumers find these opaque booking policies frustrating, further detracting from their holiday experience.
As consumer dissatisfaction grows, the report emphasizes the need for scenic areas and accommodation providers to critically assess their operations to prevent minor issues from escalading into major problems that could negatively impact travelers.
