On October 6th at 4:48 PM, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake jolted the central region of the Taiwan Strait, causing noticeable tremors across various coastal areas in Fujian, including cities like Xiamen, Quanzhou, and Zhangzhou.
The China Earthquake Networks Center has reported that the earthquake struck at a depth of 18 kilometers, with its epicenter pinpointed at 23.98 degrees north latitude and 118.68 degrees east longitude. This location is roughly 60 kilometers from the nearest coastline, about 152 kilometers from Taiwan Island, and 63 kilometers from Kinmen County. In relation to Xiamen, it was approximately 80 kilometers from both the Siming District and Huli District, while Shishi City in Quanzhou lies 84 kilometers away, and Fuzhou City is 244 kilometers distant.
Looking at the statistics, the rapid report catalog from the China Earthquake Networks Center notes that there have been 11 earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.0 or higher in the area near the epicenter over the past five years. The most significant event during this period was a 5.3 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Pingtung County, Taiwan, on June 28, 2022.
In the wake of this recent quake, residents from coastal cities, including Xiamen, Quanzhou, and Zhangzhou, reported feeling the shaking. Xiamen local Chen Shu shared his experience: “I was sitting on my sofa at home, and all of a sudden, I felt it shaking significantly.”
