A serious traffic accident occurred near 8th Avenue in Brooklyn, involving a four-year-old Chinese boy who was walking alone on the street when he was struck by a vehicle. The child sustained multiple injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment, prompting concern within the local Chinese community. Fortunately, on October 19, the child was moved from the ICU to a regular ward, and he is no longer in critical condition as he continues with his recovery.
Nicole Huang, head of the New York Parent Support Group, shared insights about the child’s situation. When the boy was admitted to the hospital on October 7, his condition was critical. He had a significant laceration on his head, and the most severe injuries were fractures in his thigh and hip. Following surgery, he remained in ICU for ongoing observation and care. On October 13, medical staff discovered an infection in his lungs, and he required assistance from a ventilator to breathe.
By October 19, doctors assessed that the boy was out of danger and transferred him to a regular ward for rehabilitation. He is now able to sit up, and his mother expressed satisfaction with his progress. In the aftermath of the accident, both of the child’s parents have resigned from their jobs to care for him. They also have a twin brother and an older sister to look after, making the situation particularly challenging for them. The mother expressed gratitude for the community’s concern and mentioned that she would seek help if needed.
While discussing the boy’s condition, Nicole Huang also presented videos of other traffic incidents. One video from July 25 shows a student who was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street near PS 160, and another video from October 19 captures a near-miss involving a child crossing the street without paying attention to oncoming traffic on 7th Avenue at 54th Street. Huang stressed that the boy’s serious injuries were not just a matter of chance and urged parents to keep a close watch on their children, emphasizing the importance of not allowing them to wander alone on the streets.
The accident involving the four-year-old occurred at the intersection of Fort Hamilton Parkway and 59th Street. The driver involved remained at the scene and was subsequently detained by police; it was reported that the driver’s license was suspended. However, the police announced on October 21 that no arrests had been made, and the investigation is still ongoing.
