Chinese immigrant Huang Jingyuan runs for Saratoga Unified School District School Board_1

In the upcoming local elections this November, Jingyuan Huang, a Chinese immigrant, is running for a seat on the Saratoga Union School District (SUSD) Board. In a recent interview, she shared her conviction about the importance of community involvement. “As long as more parents are willing to dedicate a little time, we can collectively build a stronger community,” she emphasized.

Huang, who graduated from the University of Waterloo—often dubbed the “MIT of Canada”—holds a Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering and a Master’s in Mathematics (Computer Science). After moving to the United States in search of better job prospects, she joined leading tech companies like Nvidia and Qualcomm. While working, she also pursued a Juris Doctor degree at the University of San Diego, eventually becoming a patent attorney. In 2018, Huang and her family settled in Saratoga, where her two children currently attend Argonaut Elementary School, in fifth and third grades.

In addition to her professional and parenting responsibilities, Huang has been actively involved in school volunteer work. From 2021 to 2023, she served on the Parcel Tax Oversight Committee, and for the 2023-2024 school year, she is a board member of the Argonaut Parent Teacher Association (PTA). She is also a current member of the Saratoga Education Foundation (SEF).

Through her experiences, Huang has gained valuable insights and noticed that despite the district’s robust financial health, there’s room for improvement in coordination and resource utilization. She believes this could pave the way for long-term specialized programs in athletics, arts, and crafts for students.

While acknowledging SUSD’s strong academic performance, Huang is keen to broaden the focus on children’s overall development and mental health. “Achieving this requires collaboration among parents, the district, and teachers,” she pointed out.

Leveraging her legal expertise, Huang feels confident in her capacity to navigate district regulations, interpret state education laws, and find effective ways to implement them within the school district, all while promoting transparency and sustainability.

With the increasing number of Chinese students in the Saratoga district, Huang is passionate about encouraging more Chinese parents to participate in community activities. “I believe that as long as there are more parents willing to dedicate a little time, we can collectively build a stronger community,” she reiterated.

Huang’s campaign has gained traction with endorsements from prominent figures, including Katherine Tseng, Cynthia Chang, and Phyllis Tung, who are current and former members of the Saratoga school board.
