On October 6, 2023, Busan, South Korea, hosted the event “A Night of Honor with Director Xie Fei.” This gathering was organized by the Busan International Film Festival SNU Advanced Program (BSA) and co-hosted by the FIRST Youth Film Festival, bringing together prominent figures from both the film and academic sectors of China and South Korea.
Among the notable attendees were Chen Ribiang, the Consul General of China in Busan, and Vice Consul Yu Lingfei. The event also saw participation from Park Kwang-soo, the Chairman of the Busan International Film Festival, and Executive Committee Member Seo Chang-hwan. The objective of the evening was to celebrate the achievements of Chinese cinema while fostering discussions on future collaborations.
In his opening speech, Consul General Chen Ribiang highlighted the vital role of cultural exchange between China and Korea, particularly in the film industry. He remarked on the presence of numerous professionals from the Chinese film sector and the lineup of Chinese films and documentaries scheduled for screening at the festival. Chen expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to engage in substantive dialogues about cultural exchange with Director Xie Fei and other distinguished guests.
Director Xie Fei, a prominent figure in China’s fourth generation of filmmakers, is well-known for his acclaimed works, including “Xiang Nv Xiao Xiao,” “Ben Ming Nian,” and “Xiang Hun Nu,” the latter of which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1993, marking a pivotal moment in the global recognition of Chinese cinema.
During the event, Xie Fei delivered a compelling speech titled “Chinese Cinema and Directing,” in which he reflected on the evolution of Chinese film from its early beginnings to the current wave of directors. He explored contemporary global trends in filmmaking and television production, emphasizing the necessity for filmmakers to adapt to the changing landscape brought about by new media and streaming platforms. Xie urged that it’s essential to merge artistic vision with technological advancements to create works that resonate with today’s audiences.
Earlier that day, Xie Fei also participated in a screening of “Xiang Hun Nu” and conducted a masterclass at the Busan Film Academy. There, he shared his personal experiences and insights into the filmmaking process, engaging with both local and international attendees.
As part of the ongoing 29th Busan International Film Festival, which runs from October 2 to 11, a variety of Chinese films are being showcased, further enriching the cultural tapestry of the event.
