The “Fusion and Dialogue: 2024 Hong Kong and Macao Visual Arts Biennale” recently opened at the Pu Wang Art Museum in Fuyang, Hangzhou. As the first stop of the biennale, the Hangzhou exhibition showcases works from 40 artists from Hong Kong, Macao, and Hangzhou.
The theme of this year’s biennale is “Fusion and Dialogue.” This exhibition breaks away from traditional genre-based themes, focusing for the first time on the spirit of the city and cultural fields. Notably, this year marks the largest participation of mainland cities in the biennale’s history, beginning in Hangzhou and continuing to Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Beijing. The Hangzhou section is themed “Landscapes as Background,” while Nanjing focuses on “Chronicles of the Yangtze River,” Guangzhou on “Winds of the South Today,” Shenzhen on “Metamorphosis,” and Beijing on “Islands.” Each mainland section resonates with Hong Kong’s theme of “Hong Kong Snapshots: City Strolls” and Macao’s theme of “Not Just Macao, but Renowned Macao,” alongside the overarching theme of “Fusion and Dialogue.”
In addition to the main exhibition, a special section titled “2023 Hong Kong and Macao Artists ‘Art Gathering on the Silk Road’ Exhibition” is being showcased simultaneously. This section features 32 pieces collected by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, created by 16 artists from Hong Kong, Macao, and the mainland, inspired by Dunhuang.
The Hong Kong and Macao Visual Arts Biennale, organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in collaboration with the Cultural, Sports and Tourism Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR and the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR, is a significant cultural exchange initiative held every two years since 2008. Previous biennale themes have ranged from calligraphy and painting to photography, graphic design, contemporary art, new media art, design, and art and technology, serving as an essential platform for fostering exchanges between young artists from the mainland and the Hong Kong and Macao regions.
The Hangzhou leg of the “2024 Hong Kong and Macao Visual Arts Biennale” will be open until November 14.
