On September 20th, Chengdu kicked off a major event for the 2024 “Belt and Road” initiative, themed “Developing New Quality Productive Forces: Empowering the Twin City Economic Circle Through Overseas Chinese.” This renowned gathering is aimed at amplifying the role of Chinese businesses and entrepreneurs across the globe.
Cheng Hong, Vice Chairperson of the China Overseas Chinese Federation, took the stage during the opening address to underscore the crucial contributions that overseas Chinese communities make to the Belt and Road initiative. She expressed her hopes that Chinese business leaders and enterprises abroad would actively engage in creating a modern industrial ecosystem, fostering innovative productive forces, enhancing international openness, and bolstering high-quality cooperation along the Belt and Road framework. Cheng pointed out the unique strengths that overseas Chinese bring to the table, including valuable resources in funding, technology, talent, information management, and a deep understanding of international regulations. She encouraged them to leverage these advantages to drive high-quality development in Sichuan.
He Yanzheng, Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Sichuan Provincial People’s Congress, echoed these sentiments, noting that the large Chinese diaspora functions as a vital link between Sichuan and the rest of the world. He called on overseas friends to continue nurturing international partnerships that promote Sichuan’s openness and development. He emphasized the importance of fostering people-to-people connections between China and other nations and urged the overseas Chinese community to contribute to crafting a contemporary narrative of Sichuan within the broader context of Chinese-style modernization.
During the event, the Sichuan Tianfu New Area Chamber of Commerce formalized partnerships through friendly agreements with representatives from eight overseas business associations, establishing a collaborative platform to better serve the economic interests of the Chengdu-Chongqing area.
Moreover, a scholarship ceremony took place, where the China Overseas Chinese Business Association and the Sichuan Provincial Overseas Chinese Business Association jointly donated 700,000 yuan to support the education of 100 students across 18 cities and prefectures.
Over the next three days, the event is set to bring together nearly a hundred overseas Chinese business representatives from 35 countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, Russia, Greece, and Italy. They will participate in visits to various locations like Zigong, Luzhou, Meishan, and Leshan to explore opportunities for collaboration and investment.
